MARGUERITE LARMAND
Wildflower & Textile Conversations

5 Class Series | May – September 2026 | One Saturday a Month

Dates:
Saturday May 30
Saturday, June 27
Saturday, July 25
Saturday, August 15
Saturday, September 19

10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, including a catered lunch
Limited to 10 participants · All levels welcome · Beginners encouraged

The theme for the workshop will be Wildflower Communities. We will consider the tendencies of various wildflowers that form communities and then include other wildflowers as part of an expanded interconnected community.

This idea can be “played out’ in a sampler that will be done in a one-day workshop. This is a session for beginners. Each participant’s role is to let their stitches represent the ways in which a wildflower community occupies a site and grows. Samplers will continue to be done by those who begin on any of the remaining Saturdays.

The stitches we will use will be the seed stitch and the French knot, in various sizes and colours. Practice in these two stitches, often used as filler stitches, will benefit further work in embroidery and/or crewel.

For participants who sign up for all five Saturdays, as continuing group you will follow the blooming wildflowers of Potters Creek Studio Native Garden, you will introduce new and varied stitches to a piece of clothing - a vest, jacket etc., you will gain greater understanding of how wildflower communities co-exist and you will practise techniques and materials used in embroidery and crewel.

The series is designed as a welcoming entry point for beginners, with room to deepen through practice. Sessions may be taken individually or as the full five-month series.

Kit supplied:
Backing:  linen, the most commonly used fabric for embroidery and crewel
Yarn: all natural - wool, cotton, linen, silk

Participants can add scissors, an embroidery hoop if they wish to use one and needles of differing sizes.

Each class also includes a brief introduction to the garden and native plants and their habitat with Kevin Kavanagh of South Coast Gardens.

$100 per session · $450 for the full series (plus tax)

MARGUERITE LARMAND

Marguerite Larmand spent her youth in a farming community near Georgian Bay, Ontario, a place that had great influence on her connections with the natural world.

Following a BA in Art History & Studio Practice and an MA in Education, Larmand chose Installation Art as a way of responding and connecting with her community.

Larmand’s art is governed by its content and it is through selective materials, techniques and arrangement that an observer interprets the meaning.

Themes such as memory and metaphor are integral to her work.

Larmand is of French and Ojibwa heritage and a member of the Metis Nation of Ontario. Through her milestone 2025 exhibition at the Midland Cultural Centre, Gallery of Indigenous Art, Marguerite began her quest to discover what it means to be Metis today.
